Alpaca fleece is the ultimate material for birds to create a soft, warm nest to raise their young.                          The fibre uniquely shares the characteristics of both hair and wool with an incomparable insulating quality to protect the alpacas from the extremes of temperature found in their homeland of the Andes.

Because the fibre isn't sticky with lanolin, like sheep wool, birds find it easy to select and extract what they require for nest building.

Although the fibre comes in twenty-two natural colours, the darker colours of black and browns provide the birds' nests with good camouflage. Alpaca fibre is as soft as cashmere, but one of the strongest animal fibres in the world - just what your birds would choose.

ALPACA HOT HANDS

Wheat bags have been used as an alternative therapy for many years.  Wheat has a unique cellular structure that can absorb both heat or cold quickly and then release it evenly. This makes a wheat bag a wonderful and safe alternative to a hot water bottle, or it can be used straight from the freezer for bumps or sprains. The relaxing and calming properties of lavender are well known and warming through the pad in a microwave activates the pure essential oil. Alpaca Hot Hands are the perfect way to keep your hands toasty warm on the coldest days.

Each pad has a highly insulating 100% alpaca hand–knitted cover, (design may vary slightly) made of yarn from the Fowberry herd and closed with heart-shaped mother-of-pearl buttons. The cover is hand-washable. Full heating instructions come with your Alpaca Hot Hands.

PURE ALPACA YARN FOR SALE

The organic fleece that makes up our yarn comes from the 2006 shearing of our herd of alpacas. This fleece uniquely shares the characteristics of both hair and wool making it supremely warm and insulating.  It also makes the ultimate, natural, un-dyed hand-knitting yarn, free from lanolin and therefore more hypoallergenic than other wools.  This luxury yarn is delightfully soft, silky and easy to work with, while still being stronger, warmer and much more durable than sheep-wool yarn.  Our yarn is processed in an environmentally friendly way without the use of harsh chemicals that destroy the natural elasticity and shine of the fleece.  This yarn makes incredibly soft knitted garments and accessories with a lovely lustre and drape. Slight inconsistencies in yarn are compatible with a naturally produced product.  As with all animal fibre yarn, weight may vary by up to 17% dependent on climatic conditions of storage.

Available in the natural fleece colours of: Shiny Black (limited quantity), Winter White, Pale Fawn, Camel and Milk Chocolate Brown in 100g squat balls pulling from the middle. Knit as 4-ply.  Suggested needle size – 3mm or 3½mm. Approximately 336 metres in one 100g ball.
