Alpaca Course - Advanced
NEXT ADVANCED COURSE
28/03/2012 (three places left)
This course is designed for those with previous knowledge of alpacas and their care, or a continuation from the Introductory Alpaca Course.
We explore in more detail a smaller range of subjects than the Introductory Alpaca Course with time for discussion. There is a power point presentation and bound booklet to take home. This course should enable the attendee to broaden their knowledge of alpacas and benefit from the extensive experience of birthing, prize-winning breeding programme and profitable marketing of alpacas and their produce that Graham and Jenny MacHarg have gained over several years.
- Alpaca birthing; pre and post-natal health of dam; post-natal health of cria; bottle feeding cria; growing on and weaning of cria; essential equipment for birthing and birthing checklist; importance of record keeping.

- Alpaca evaluation - Prerequisites for improvement in alpacas and performance evaluation; the highs and lows of heritability; progeny testing and herd improvement; selection for genetic gain. Individual Alpaca Evaluation form to use at home.
- Fleece characteristics and fibre evaluation: understanding fleece qualities; interpreting histograms and how they relate to fleece characteristics.
- Marketing of alpacas and your alpaca farm, alpaca and knitwear sales opportunities. What works and what doesn't.
